Father purifies the first Greed and later implants the second Greed into Ling Yao, essentially binding them together. The first Greed wants to learn how Ed bonded Al's soul with the armor so he could do the same (perhaps Father's method of homunculi creation gives them souls, or an equivalent). The homunculi really aren't concerned with obtaining souls (possibly due to the manner in which Father created them from himself). Then all he has to do is bind his soul to whatever he wants since he already learned how to do so.When the other homunculi finally create the Stone, Greed can steal/obtain it and create a soul for himself. So he plans to learn how to bind souls to objects. Greed knows that the other homunculi are busy creating the Stone and he is betting that they will eventually succeed.Homunculi lack souls and are driven to create the Philosopher's Stone by the desire to have a soul. The issue of souls in FMA/FMA:Brotherhood was a bit of a problem for me but I think you just helped me get it. In both series, Greed helps the Elrics later on (by telling Ed the way to defeat the homunculi in FMA and by fighting Wrath/Führer Bradley when he bonded with Ling Yao in Brotherhood) so I've always seen him as the sort of character who isn't evil but simply does his own thing. I kind of saw Greed and his gang as a sort of "good" since they looked out for/took care of one another and tried to help each other. I thought it was strange that Greed was so concerned with learning a way to become immortal that he couldn't use.Īs for their trustworthiness, I guess I've played too many diplomatic rogues in D&D because they seemed to be straightforward to me. What I never understood in FMA (not Brotherhood) was why Greed wanted to learn how to soul bond when it's mentioned multiple times that the homunculi do not have souls. I really didn't think about Ed trying to save Greed from committing the taboo since he fights Greed, but it does make sense that he wouldn't want anyone else to got through what Al did. ![]() ![]() I don't remember if details were ever given on how the others came to be trapped in their armors (I believe they were sacrificed for a philosopher's stone, and therefore possibly not trapped in the truth, but still separated from their bodies none the less), but it does seem a bit odd that Greed would have been unaware of them, or of the ones who made them that way. Though now that I think of it, since Greed was originally with the other homonculi and "father", why is it that he had never come in contact with Barry and the other hollow suit of armor brothers from the 5th laboratory? IIRC the 5th laboratory was connected to their main base of operations underneath Central, and both Envy and Lust were aware of the other 2(/3) armor people who guarded it, and even interacted with them. Also, Al hates being a suit of armor, and Ed is trying to get him out throughout the series, so regardless of who the person is, I just don't think Ed would wish that fate on anyone, so in a sense, he's trying to save Greed both from the mistake of human transmutation, and from having to live life as a suit of armor.Īlso, from when I watched it, Greed and his pals didn't initially come across as trustworthy, so I wouldn't have struck any kind of a deal with them, regardless of the repercussions. I'm not sure if Ed would have been able to, or would have known how to bond Al's soul to the armor had his soul not already have been separated and trapped in the truth, meaning for someone else to do it, they would likely have to open a portal to the truth again through human transmutation, which is not something Ed would be encouraging. ![]() I think Ed mainly declined the deal because of what bonding Al to the armor involved, and because they were trying to reverse it.
